Research:

Giving nutritional information a more prominent place on food packaging has been a drawn out task. Now a new system that places the important nutritional information on the front of food packaging will come into use. The system that also incorporates traffic light colours for fat, saturates, sugars and salt levels is meant to make finding and choosing healthier foods easier.

In the past there have been multiple systems in use and as a result many people were confused. This new system will mean consistent labeling on food products, though the system is still voluntary so only an estimated 60% of products will display the label. Though there have been positive steps with supermarket giants including Tesco, Waitrose, Morrisons, Sainsburys, Asda and the Co-operative, and with large food manufacturers such as Mars and Nestle also signing up.
