Ulcerative Colitis

What is Ulcerative Colitis?

Ulcerative Colitis is a condition where the colon, or large intestine, and rectum become inflamed. For some, the impact of Ulcerative Colitis is minimal in their daily lives, for others, it has a significant impact.

Symptoms of Ulcerative Colitis

  • Recurring diarrhea
  • Stools with blood, mucus, or pus
  • Abdominal pain
  • Frequent need to empty bowels
  • Loss of appetite
  • Weight loss
  • Extreme fatigue

Ulcerative Colitis is thought to be an autoimmune condition. This means the immune system mistakenly attacks healthy tissue. In the case of Ulcerative Colitis, the immune system mistakes harmless bacteria in the colon as a threat and causes the colon to become inflamed.

Dietician treatment of Ulcerative Colitis

Although dietary intervention is not curative, a nutritious diet can help support good immune function and reduce symptoms of fatigue and weight loss. A dietitian can help ensure your diet is nutritionally complete (an analysis via Nutri Plan), and help by advising supplements that may be required to ensure proper gut function.
