Hypothyroidism is a condition where the thyroid gland in the body is underactive and fails to produce sufficient thyroid hormone. Insufficient thyroid hormone has the impact of slowing the body’s metabolism. This is a relatively common condition, although some cases go undiagnosed, as the most typical blood test for thyroid function, which is always reliable. In addition, the symptoms of hypothyroid are not always specific to hypothyroidism and many are characteristic of ageing or slowing metabolism. As a result of slowing metabolic rate, there are strong links between hypothyroid and obesity. People with hypothyroidism also struggle to lose weight.
The most common cause of hypothyroid is an inherited condition in which the thyroid is enlarged and inefficient in producing the thyroid hormone. This condition is known as Hashimoto's Thyroiditis. Other causes include inflammation of the thyroid gland (lymphocytic thyroiditis), and defects in the pituitary gland. Sometimes treatment for hypothyroid (radioactive iodine or surgery) can actually result in further damage to the gland.
Treatment for hypothyroidism is usually successful with hormone replacement tablets. Unfortunately, if not diagnosed or treated, hypothyroidism brings increased risks of many of the complications associated with obesity – heart disease, high blood pressure and high cholesterol.
